With all the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and with many businesses closing, this could be time to re-evaluate and look at new employment and training opportunities in the property and the wider real estate sector.

Are you looking to find a new position that’s perfect for you, or add a little sparkle to that CV that will help you succeed in finding employment?  Not sure where to start? Well, don’t worry; that’s what we’re here for. We’ll run you through the types of employment and training opportunities in the property and the wider real estate sector that are available.

Employment opportunities in the property sector

Apprenticeships

If you don’t want to go to university, and want to go straight into a trade, apprenticeships in the property sector might be right for you.

This means you’ll go straight into work, learn from experts trained to get the best out of you. This could take anywhere between 1 and 6 years depending on your chosen field and can lead straight into a fully paid, full time job (if you get your qualifications).

Graduate scheme

Say you’ve completed your degree and now you’re looking for a job. Many property firms have graduate schemes that have been tried and tested for years - why not go for one of them?

They’re a great opportunity and open to university leavers only so can sometimes mean a bit more money for the applicant.

Entry-level jobs and beyond

If you’ve done some training, or if you’re just starting out, you can find a lot of employment opportunities in the same place; job sites.  We've listed specialist property recruitment agencies on The Landsite to make it easy for you find.

Pick your specific search term (usually the job title you work and the location) and start scrolling.

Some examples;  Dove & Hawk are recruitment specialists for the property construction industy.  The Just Group focus on Mechanical & Engineering roles.  Broomham Recruitment can help you with all aspects of estate agency, property and sales recruitment.   There is a wide range of recruitment agencies on The Landsite - take a look!

Take the time to write cover letters for each application; they’ll appreciate the personal touch. You can also try networking in the sector, especially if you’ve already got a lot of experience. A personal recommendation will go much further than any cv!

Training opportunities in the property sector

Degree first

The traditional approach for training for a job in the property sector is to complete a degree in a chosen field that you will specialise once you leave university.

This will give you a good grounding in the subject, good theoretical knowledge. If there’s an opportunity for a placement, take it. Great way to get hands-on experience and will be impressive for employers later on.

Postgraduate or conversion course

Don’t worry if you didn’t pick property as your first choice of course at university. There’s plenty of time to get into it. Many people decide to complete conversion courses, masters degrees and even PHDs in property once their undergrad is complete, so you definitely won’t be alone.

However, this route can have a hefty cost associated with it. It is possible to get a ‘sponsorship’ from a company for this, though remember you will probably have to work for them once it’s ended.

Training courses

It’s never too late to learn more about what sector of property or real estate industry you are interested in. There are some fantastic courses online that can be part of your continued professional development (CPD) time, or can be done at home.

This is highly worthwhile as most give you a professional and accredited qualification, however these can be quite costly and time-consuming so you must make sure it will fit in with your current position.

You could also do in-person courses and seminars with leading figures. You’ll often see these at trade shows and are a good opportunity to network.

As you can see, there’s a wide range of employment and training opportunities in the property sector. It’s just a matter of finding the right one for you.
