Smart Pillars - The Worlds First Green Lamp Post Inspired by the knowledge the industry has gained about the benefits of urban greening in increasingly busy cityscapes, we wanted to take the concept of vertical retrofitting of plants one step further by using the existing resource of street furniture (including lamp posts) as a framework on which to grow plants, thus the Smart Pillar™ was designed.
Scotscape's Landscape team carried out the soft landscaping, tree planting, shrub planting, soil fill and turfing at this landmark project which forms part of the P5K which runs around the perimeter of the Greenwich Peninsula.

The Smartscape team developed this fantastic green cladding system for the sportswear brand Asics back in 2017. The system has developed beautifully and the plants are thriving in these bespoke irrigated planters which were designed for multiple Asics Stores around Europe.

Bruichladdich, the Progressive Hebridean Distillery located in the Isle of Islay in Argyll has included a living wall in their fantastic shop which sells World renowned Whiskies and the infamous Botanist Gin.Scotscape installed this 21.5m2 interior living wall in just 2 days, helping to create a wow factor and following Bruichladdich’s philosophy for using edible plants sourced from the Hebridean landscape to bring unique flavour to their delicious premium gin.
Scotscape and Grosvenor Britain and Ireland recently launched the Smart Pillar, whereby Scotscape’s Fytotextile Living wall system was adapted to be retrofitted onto the lamp posts of Ebury Street in London's Belgravia. With irrigation powered by solar energy, a damage free fitting system and a tank of 75 ltrs of water incorporated in the design – it looks like greening up our lamp posts could become the norm across the UK.
