A rare and remarkable property, transformed from a 19th century gasworks into an award-winning home, has come onto the market in the Cotswolds.
Located in the quintessential Cotswold village of Upper Slaughter, The Gasworks was acquired by novelist Jeanette Winterson in 2011.
She subsequently secured planning permission and instructed architect Chris Dyson to transform it into a residence.
Constructed in 1877 to provide carbide gas to light the nearby Brassey Estate, the original stone building was carefully restored and a bold CorTen steel extension added, creating a striking distinction between old and new that plays homage to its industrial past.
During this period, Winterson sold the property to a new owner, who ensured the original vision was completed as planned.
The property has subsequently received multiple accolades, including The Sunday Times Home Award and shortlisted for RIBA, WAN and Blueprint awards.
Kay McCluskey, associate at Savills, said: “The Gasworks is a fabulous marriage of industrial and domestic – a remarkable piece of design while also being a wonderfully comfortable home that makes the most of its idyllic surroundings.
“Its architectural provenance will likely attract those with an appreciation for design, or who are in search of a creative retreat.”
The Gasworks is being marketed by Savills for a guide price of £1,850,000.
