A Government consultation is asking for your views on developing a secure and reusable digital identification service, to make processes such as reference checking easier and more reliable. Can digital ID services be made better, centralised, and more useful?

Propertymark has already made advances in secure digital identification with NAEA Propertymark's Propertymark Passport, enabling members to verify identity and support HMRC compliance, but a Government consultation is asking the question on a wider scale.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) is seeking views on how the Government can develop a useful and secure digital identity system. This system needs to be fit for purpose in a growing digital economy, and developed in partnership with the private, voluntary, and other sectors.

The consultation contains twenty questions on the following areas:

Needs and problems

It is often difficult to prove things such as name, address or qualifications. Would digital ID checking work to meet individual and business needs? What are the benefits and barriers? Do you see any opportunities for a reusable digital ID to add value to services?

Criteria for trust

Trust is essential in building a digital ID system. How can the Government build trust in a digital ID system – and would using such a system build trust in the processes it supported? There is also protection of privacy to be considered.

Role of the Government

Use of public sector held information is crucial to the success of digital identity. How best should Government meet demands for access to check the validity of documents?

Role of the private sector

The private sector already has a wide range of identity-related services in place. What is the private sector’s role in helping to build trust, and continuing to support a digital identity service in the long term?

We encourage our members to respond to the consultation directly, giving their views on how a central, reusable digital identity system might impact on their business, for example in AML and reference checking.

You have until 11:59pm on 15 September 2019 to respond to the consultation. You can also send your views to the Propertymark Policy Team
