How Regulations Impact the use of Sustainable Materials in the Construction Industry

In recent years, the construction industry has been under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and adopt sustainable development practices.  Government regulations are now playing a significant role in driving the use of sustainable materials such as timber, recycled plastic, and natural insulation in construction.

One key government regulation changing the way that materials and products are used in construction is the Building Regulations Part L. This regulation sets out the energy performance requirements for new and existing buildings. The latest revision of Part L requires new buildings to have a 31% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the previous standards. This means that builders need to source sustainable materials and technologies, such as renewable energy systems and low-carbon building materials, to meet the new standards.

As part of the 2019 Climate Change Act, the government has announced a ban on the use of fossil fuels from 2025 currently applicable to new build housing market.  All new homes require energy saving features such as alternative heating systems, such as heat pumps, powered by renewable energy sources, higher quality insulation and double glazing.

In addition to government regulations, there are also several industry-led initiatives.  One such initiative is the UK Green Building Council's Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, set out for organisations to reach net zero building emissions by 2030.  Additionally, the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification has become widely adopted in the construction industry, which evaluates the sustainability performance of buildings.

The construction industry has a huge responsiblility in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and adopting sustainable development practices in order to protect the environment for future generations.
