Why Should We Care About Water Waste?

Waste mismanagement is a problem that continues to affect both individuals and the wider environment. But why should you care as a business owner?

Mobilising business leaders to drive a change in the way we handle waste will go a long way to helping overcome the worldwide waste problem. Not only will you be doing good for the planet, but you may even find modernising your approach to waste management to be financially beneficial.

According to this guide, 57% of consumers are willing to change their purchasing habits if it means they can do good for the environment. As a result, positioning your business as an eco-conscious brand could go a long way to helping attract customers now and in the future.

Every business produces waste, but not all businesses know how to properly manage it. Disposing of waste in a way that is sustainable and doesn’t damage the environment can be a challenge, but there are some simple steps that every business can take to make sure their waste is properly managed.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

The first step to taking a more sustainable approach to waste management is to reduce the amount that you’re producing in the first place. Cutting down on your use of materials is the best way to limit the harm your business activities will have on the environment when it comes to waste.

Using less isn’t the only way to reduce your business’ waste – consider ways you can recycle or repurpose materials or equipment. For example, can you give a piece of old furniture you no longer use to an employee to upcycle, or find an alternative use for it within the office? Not only will this help to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill, but it will also save money on buying new things.

Responsible disposal

The second step is to properly dispose of the waste that your business does produce. It’s important to know the different types of waste that can be recycled, and ensure that these materials are all put into the correct storage containers.

When it comes to hazardous materials, you’ll need to take a little extra care to ensure they’re disposed of safely. Make sure that they are separated from non-hazardous waste, and store them in a designated container out of the elements, then use an authorised handler to remove the waste from your site. You’ll also need to fill out a consignment note for both the waste handlers and for your own records.

For any waste that can’t be reused or recycled, you should have a plan for what to do with it. The best option is typically to find a local waste management company that can dispose of it in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.

To sum up

As a business owner, there are so many things to think about on a daily basis. But ensuring your company takes a healthy approach to waste management should be high up on your list of priorities. Making more sustainable decisions will help to future-proof your business as the world’s environmental issues continue to stack up.
