Making a Rental Property Feel Like Home

When renting a property it’s understandable that you will not want to invest large amounts of your hard-earned cash into a house that you don’t own.

But we also understand that even though it’s not technically “yours”, you’ll still want it to feel homely and give it your own stamp.

As a tenant, you’re often limited to the changes you can make to the property, but there are a few easy alterations you can make to help it feel more like home. Here are three easy ways to do just that.

1. Add an accent colour 

Although most landlords are happy for you to decorate (it saves them money after all), you should always ask permission before making any changes and get their approval in writing – this will help avoid any problems at the end of your tenancy agreement.

It’s common knowledge that rental properties are often painted top to bottom in neutral shades like magnolia in order to appeal to the greatest number of tenants. But although you may despair at a lack of personality, it does act as a great base for you to add your own accent colours without redecorating.

By choosing replaceable accessories such as curtains, cushions, wall art and ornaments, you can quickly introduce a vibrant splash of colour to any room. And best of all, you can take them with you when you leave. Just remember to safely store any original items that you replace so they can be changed back over when you move out.

2. Use Rugs to Add Warmth and Depth

A rug is a powerful accessory that has the ability to change the look and feel of a room in an instant. Choose one in a vibrant pattern or bold colour to create a focal point for your space, or pull your room’s colour scheme together by opting for something in a coordinating shade.

Rugs are also ideal for breaking up large wood, laminate or tiled floors – like you might find in a kitchen or hallway – adding a layer of cushioning and warmth that will be most welcome when walking barefoot.

There are plenty of options on the market now, so there’s a rug for every personality and space. You can go for a ready-made version or even design your own bespoke rug these days, choosing everything from material and colour to size and border style.

3. Choose Key Statement Pieces

It’s amazing what a difference a few key pieces of statement furniture can make and how they’re able to transform an otherwise bland space into something unique.

Look for pieces that stand out and are a little bit different. We particularly love the look of wooden ladder shelves, bold sideboards, rich velvet sofas and quirky lamps. Keep it to just two or three pieces per room and ensure the rest of the decor and accessories remain restrained and you won’t go far wrong.
