Aldi has announced an ambitious £1.6 billion expansion plan to meet the UK’s increasing demand for affordable groceries.
Over the next two years, the supermarket chain plans to open 80 new stores, significantly enhancing its presence across the country. This expansion is set to create thousands of jobs and provide more opportunities for British suppliers.
Among the towns targeted for new store openings are Amersham, Watford, Willesden, Hanworth, and Yate. These locations are part of Aldi’s strategy to bring high-quality, affordable groceries to more communities. Additionally, Aldi is actively seeking sites in Ealing and Witney, further demonstrating its commitment to expanding its reach.
The retailer currently operates 1,060 stores and aims to increase this number to 1,500. This growth is driven by a strong performance in sales, which rose to a record £18.1 billion for the year ending December 2024. Aldi’s market share has also increased to 10.8 per cent, making it the UK’s third-largest grocer by value of food and drink sales.
Giles Hurley, chief executive officer for Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasised the company’s dedication to providing affordable groceries: “Shoppers are still finding things difficult, and that’s why we’re staying laser-focused on doing what Aldi does best – offering customers great quality products at unbeatable prices. Nobody else is making the same commitment to everyday low prices – no clubs, no gimmicks, no tricks – just prices our customers can trust and quality they can depend on.”
Aldi’s expansion is not just about opening new stores; it also includes upgrading existing ones and developing its distribution network. This comprehensive approach ensures that Aldi can continue to offer competitive prices while maintaining high standards of quality and service.
The company’s commitment to affordability is further highlighted by its efforts to lower prices on over 900 products this year. Aldi has been recognised as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for four consecutive years by consumer group Which?, even when loyalty schemes are considered.
As Aldi continues to grow, it remains focused on supporting British businesses. In 2024, the supermarket spent £14 billion with UK suppliers, reaffirming its commitment to British sourcing standards. This includes becoming the UK’s biggest seller of British Wagyu steaks through its Specially Selected Wagyu range.
With its record investment and strategic expansion, Aldi is poised to bring its unique blend of quality and affordability to millions more customers across the UK, ensuring that more families can access the groceries they need at prices they can trust.
