The Site

Margate Winter Gardens is set in an excavated hollow, cascading down the cliff side in two horseshoe shapes. The Néo-Grecian style building was constructed in 1911 with an open Amphitheatre attached to the Main concert Hall. The building is Grade II listed and of significant heritage value.

In the 1930s additions were made to the north and south, along with the rebuilding of the East Wing and construction of the stage in 1946. Roofing was added to the Amphitheatre in the 1960s and further additions made to the building in 1970s and 1980s. The northern extension, built in the 1930s, overlooks the promenade.

Situation & Location

Margate (population c 63,000) is a characterful seaside town, on the northern Kent coastline, approximately 16 miles north east of the city of Canterbury, and is 75 miles east of London. The town is accessible by train in 1 hour and 30 minutes.
