Hertfordshire’s County Hall could be developed for residential, commercial or community use after the council’s head office building was officially listed for sale.

The 25.58-acre, Hertford town centre site equates to 225,000 sq ft of office space. Hertfordshire County Council agreed earlier this year to market it for alternative uses. It has already confirmed the council chamber will be moving away from County Hall to its Stevenage campus.

The sale includes the original Grade II*-listed main building, several more recent extensions, the Grade II-listed register office and a 1,000-space multi-story car park.

The property, which has served as Hertfordshire County Council’s head offices since the late 1930s, is now listed for sale with Savills and Walter Cooper Surveyors.

Interested parties are invited to make an offer for the site before a deadline of 12pm on December 4.

Molly Eyles, associate in the development team at Savills in Cambridge, said: “The original building was designed by architects Charles Holloway James and Stephen Rowland Pierce – who were well known for their large public works – and constructed by C Miskin & Son of St Albans in 1939.

“It was subsequently extended to provide modern office space, meeting rooms and a canteen/restaurant in the 1970s.

“Since September 2023 it has been promoted strictly for employment use. However there has been limited interest and we are now marketing the building for alternative uses – potentially residential, commercial or community purposes.

“Any change of use would be subject to obtaining the required planning permissions, while potential bidders will be expected to demonstrate their proposals will protect the building’s heritage and meet the county council’s requirements. It represents an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in the future of this important town centre site.”

The site is close to Hertford town centre with quick links to other major towns including Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, St Albans, Stevenage, Cheshunt and Bishop’s Stortford.

Leahoe House and Gardens, located directly to the northwest and also owned by Hertfordshire County Council, will be part of a separate redevelopment project.
