Plans for Cambridge International Technology Park have been rejected by councillors over its impacts on traffic and the landscape.

The proposed park was off Fulbourn Road, adjacent to Peterhouse Technology Park, home to AI company Arm’s global headquarters.

The hybrid planning application was submitted by Abstract (Cambridge) Limited and comprised 56,473 sq m of offices and research and development facilities, as well as landscaped green space and a multi-storey car park.

The scheme was designed with global advancing technology companies in mind, according to the design access statement, hoping to further increase the abundance of innovation and invention in the city and wider area, all situated within a sustainable technology park.

Despite the recommendation for approval by council officers, the application was refused by Cambridge City Council’s joint development committee.

The reasons given for the decision, published in the decision document were “The proposed development will result in unacceptable traffic impacts which will exacerbate existing congestion in the local and wider areas.

The proposals include inadequate mitigation measures in the submitted travel plan to reduce travel to the site by car, resulting in a development that is overly reliant on travel by car.

The proposed development, due to its scale and massing, would result in unacceptable impacts on the surrounding Green Belt and landscape.”

Abstract (Cambridge) Limited can appeal the decision.
