Dream of Home Ownership Becomes a Reality

Generation rent may be spreading through the ranks, but the average age of renters is at its highest in a long time. It’s no secret that market changes, the economy, and dare we say, Brexit, has impacted on people being able to afford a place of their own.

And for one such couple who thought that being able to buy their own home was simply a dream, the seemingly unobtainable became a reality.

Martyn and Terri Bruce, renters in Cotford St Luke near Taunton, were keen to lay down roots in the village for themselves and three-year-old son Alfred. After moving to the countryside from Plymouth following a promotion for Terri, an English teacher, the couple sought many options but didn’t believe they’d be able to afford their own home.

“We knew prices around the village were quite high. We had given up on the idea of being able to afford our own home,” explained Martyn. Terri spotted that Larkfleet Homes were about to start building a development of 33 homes at Quantock View on the outskirts of Cotford St Luke.

Initially, they thought home ownership in the popular village was out of their reach. Martyn and Terri reached out to our Taunton office, who are marketing the properties for the development. On chatting to residential negotiator Christina Gross, Terri discovered they qualified for Help To Buy. “Christina has been amazing,” said Martyn.

The couple had heard of Help To Buy, but said that no one had explained it so simply before. With a 5% deposit the Government will put in 20% interest free for five years making the couple’s property dream a reality.

This Help To Buy scheme helps buyers achieve a fuller deposit, making mortgages more obtainable, as well as helping to get lower interest and repayment rates.

The Bruces have reserved ‘The Simonsbath’ – a three-bedroom house with a garage. “It felt like heaven. It’s very family-friendly. It’s just idyllic,” said Martyn, who works for a vending company.

“They are delighted to be buying their first home outright and I felt honoured to be able to help them achieve what they had not considered possible,” said Christina.

Quantock View is located on the edge of Cotford St Luke and offers a range of three, four and five bedroom high quality Larkfleet Homes within this popular village which is surrounded by stunning open countryside and sits at the foot of the Quantock Hills.
